Dominique Gelin | Membership Director | gelind@collegedems.com
University of Central Florida
Originally from Miami, Florida, Dominique now lives in Orlando where she studies at the University of Central Florida. Like many others, her first taste of political activism came in the fall of 2008, while fervently working to help elect President Obama. She would find herself campaigning for Congressman Kendrick Meek’s Senate race the year after.
Last year, Dom had the pleasure of serving as the Director of Political Activism for the College Democrats at UCF. In that time, UCF recognized chapter with “Most Creative Programming” award for their intense work during the VOTE 2010 campaign. The following semester, the College Democrats at UCF were able to add caucuses to their chapter structure, and element that remains central to their activism today.
The Florida College Democrats Women’s Caucus was Dom’s first organizing experience on the statewide level, where she served as Chair during the 2010-2011 school year. It was here that she was able to learn the skills and build the team she now leads as the President for the Florida College Democrats.
Ultimately, this is the kind of work that has led to her understanding of how crucial this year is for College Democrats. How efficient, productive, and organized we are during the 2011-2012 school year will determine our level of success at the ballot box. Dom sees the role of the Director of Membership as one where she can be a resource to chapters and federations as we register our classmates, go dorm-to-dorm, and develop the future of the Democratic Party.
