What Does Black History Mean?

What does black history mean? Beatrice Peterson, CDA Black Caucus Chair, gives this perspective:

This question is often asked throughout the month of February. Why do we celebrate Black History Month? What does it mean? Black History Month allows African Americans to share with the nation the significant contributions of our trailblazers. As we enter this historic month, Tyler Hercules, National Vice Chair of the College Democrats Black Caucus and Temple University senior shares his perspective, “Black History month is a time for reflection and discussion about the strides that have been made in America. It is through the unwavering strength and determination of leaders that came before us that we are able to stand taller. The journey of Blacks in America has not always been easy, but through the battles, we fought for justice, equality, and civil rights for all. We continue to strive for a better tomorrow and we recognize that there is still much progress to be made.”

Four years ago, we achieved what many had deemed impossible. In 2008, the dream of an African American president became a reality. Since Barack Obama’s historic election, we’ve seen progress in our communities, from health care to education, through the Affordable Care Act and the promise of increased funding for America’s 105 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) over the next ten years. These actions show a deep commitment from President Obama to the Black community.

Yet we also commemorate Black History Month to underscore the struggle that lies ahead. Rather than a celebration of victories past, Black History Month stands as a reminder that progress comes at a price and that we must continue to make advances for a better America. Our country was built on a strong foundation, but it is up to us to ensure that we continue to build upon it. By taking a stand on our campuses and in our communities, we can promise our future generations a better tomorrow.
