State Spotlight: College Democrats of Tennessee

The College Democrats of Tennessee have hit the ground running this school year. They have started off the year hard at work developing a better statewide organization with the Tennessee Young Democrats and the Tennessee Democratic Party to make sure student voters are a priority.

Christopher Jerrolds, Chair of the College Democrats of Tennessee, notes that he is “most proud that we have started to unite the chapters across the state to form a more unified voice for advancing our concerns. Realigning our organization with the TN Young Democrats to form a stronger partnership is just one example of how CDTN is making positive steps in turning the tide in Tennessee.”

Today, I woke up to the news that President Obama is launching an initiative to combat sexual assault on college campuses. After shedding a tear, I felt the need to step up and break my silence. There are too many young men and women experiencing sexual assault in this day in age for me to stay silent. Sexual assault is a subject that is blanketed by shame, with many young women like me feeling ashamed and blaming ourselves for the heinous actions of another person.

Ruy Laredo, a senior at University of California – Davis, is an exemplary College Democrat who has taken initiative on projects important to Democrats and stepped up to leadership on a local, statewide, and national level.

Though his family was always politically engaged, Ruy, a native of California, initially got involved in politics through a high school project his senior year where he examined minority voters in the 2008 election.
