Equality

President Obama has made LGBT rights an important part of his work. President Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, lifted the HIV Entry Ban, and guaranteed LGBT families the right to visit and make medical decisions for their partners. He has also worked with his cabinet agencies to protect LGBT Americans against housing discrimination and extend medical leave to LGBT parents. The White House and Congress have also made repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” a priority. Legislation repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was passed by the Senate Armed Services Committee and the US House of Representatives in May. We will continue to advocate for LGBT rights until “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” is repealed. President Obama is also committed to ensuring safe work environments for LGBT Americans by passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and to repealing the Defense of Marriage Act.

College Democrats continue to be engaged everywhere from the halls of Congress to college campuses and in their local communities working in support of LGBT equality and rights.
